Students return to school closed by bomb scare
EDISON: A bomb threat found at JP Stevens High School on Wednesday had authorities searching the building throughout the afternoon and evening, police said. Nothing suspicious was found.
Police said a message was found at 2 p.m. Wednesday, written in pen on the arm of a chair in a waiting area in the vice principal's office. The vice principal is responsible for discipline and police believe it may have been written by someone unhappy with disciplinary measures taken against him or her.
The message made a derogatory comment about the school and said the person was going to blow it up on Sept. 27, 2007. Police don't know when the message was scrawled, but said more than 100 students have been in the office in the past 4-5 days.
"We're trying to narrow down potential suspects,'' said Lt. Joseph Shannon. ""It's a
terroristic threat and if the person is found, there could be criminal charges as well as Board of Education discipline.''
The letters were in small print and police viewed it as a low-level threat. Shannon would not specify what type of security measures were enacted, but the building was inspected Wednesday afternoon and evening to ensure its integrity before allowing students to return on Thursday, Shannon said.
On Thursday morning, the school's roughly 2,250 students were only permitted to enter the building through the main entrance and six police officers were stationed at the doors.
